You’ve written a blog post: you legend! But you’re not quite done and dusted yet.
So, after you publish a blog post, you gotta promote it. This can be trickier than the writing part.
Not sure how to share your blog with the world?
Here’s 21 things to do to get more eyeballs on your blog.
What to do after your publish a blog part one: circulating
Boring but important: reread it
Just give it a quick once-over to check for any typos that snuck in. Sometimes when you are fixing a final typo, you accidentally make a new one.
Craft powerful intros
You’re gonna be sharing your blog post on social media. So, you need powerful captions to introduce it. These captions can be trickier to write than the post itself. You want to give them the sizzle, not the sausage. By that, I mean, don’t give away the full content of the blog. Give them just enough to intrigue to encourage that all-important click through.
Share to your email list
Your email subscribers are your VIPs. Your number one peeps, your crew. So always give them the news first. Share a quick email post with a link to your blog post. It doesn’t have to be a long wordy email. (I wrote a few emails for a leading healthcare brand with a limit of 44 words).
Plus, it’s a good idea to resend the email a week later to those who haven’t opened it (with a new headline). If your readers missed your first email, you can get extra traction by sending again.
Pitch guest post options
If you think your particular blog post is extra special, perhaps it should not be published on your site at all? It could do better being placed as a guest post on another site. Look for similar but non-competing businesses that have the same audience as you. Ideally, they have a broader reach and better domain authority than your website. Give it a shot. Simply send them the blog post and suggest it may be a good fit for their readers. If you get a yes, then you can remove the post from your site and so it can be published as a guest blog. You’ll raise your awareness among readers of that blog, plus you’ll get a nice backlink for your own site too.
Explore media opportunities
It’s PR, darling. Is this blog post strong enough to make it to the media? Your local paper or industry news website may give it a run. It can’t hurt to send them the post. It’s easy to find out an editorial email address for your local paper or news website. Send in your story, with a brief introduction explaining why their audience will like it. (Make sure to check editorial guidelines too). You could get free valuable media coverage out of it. Noice.
Pitch it to podcasts
Could your blog post be a subject for a podcast? If you don’t have your own podcast, then perhaps you can pitch the idea to your favourite podcast hosts. Don’t let the fear of rejection stop you. A simple offer about what you can discuss and how it will benefit the podcast might get you a few guest podcast opportunities.
Invite your network to share it
If you have friendly colleagues in your industry, why not ask them to share your content? This can give your blog post reach beyond your readers. They could share it in their email marketing on their social media or give you a backlink on their website. If you want to be annoying, you can tag your colleagues in posts and ask them to share it. (Only if you are uncool though.) Instead of that, find a few like-minded legends to share content with. You share theirs, they share yours.
Share it in forums
Are there industry or consumer forums that chat about your area of expertise? A few well-timed shares can help new readers find you.
Repurposing on purpose
Get that blog working hard for you baby! It’s no point wasting time writing a blog, only to share it once or twice. You gotta repurpose and repurpose it good and proper.
Internal links
Adding links from your top-performing blogs to your latest post can help readers discover your new post. Plus it’s good for SEO, helping Google find the latest posts and using keyword-rich anchor text tells Google what your latest post is about.
Publishing a follow up
If you get a good reaction? Follow it up? If someone comments with a question, or raises an issue, how about a response piece?
Check your analytics
Google Analytics is a bit overwhelming, and I’m no expert. But you do want to know if your blog post is doing its job – driving traffic to your website. So check Google Analytics regularly to see what’s working best.
This snapshot from my website shows that six of the top-visited pages in the last 28 days were blog posts. (The ‘/’ indicates the home page.)
Reply to comments
I confess I get very few comments on my blog posts. But if you get them – hurrah! Give a thoughtful reply. After you publish a blog post, check back often for comments. You never know.
Email signature
Add your latest blog to your email signature. Your clients and your most contacted people are much more likely to read it.
What to do after your publish a blog: part two: social media sharing
You can share your blog as a post (using your decent intro). Or you can share it native to LinkedIn with an article. I’m told the LinkedIn algorithm prefers articles, because it keeps readers on LinkedIn. However, I still prefer to publish links to my blog, because I want the traffic on my own site. But you can experiment and see what works for you.
Facebook is a gold mine for your blog posts. Of course, after you publish a blog post, share it on your business Facebook page. But don’t stop there, oh-heavens no.
- Share on your personal page. From time to time, after you publish your blog, share it on your personal Facebook page. You will get a few more eyeballs reading it. Because they rather like you, your friends and family are often likely to share it too.
- Do a Facebook live. I confess I don’t do this. But you are smarter than I am. So you will.
- Share in any Facebook groups that allow promos. It makes a nice change from all the ‘buy my stuff’ content.Take note of the groups that allow promo posts and of course follow the rules.
- Look for Facebook group chats asking questions about your blog post topic and share your post. Do a Facebook search every few days after you publish. (This is a good job for a VA.)
It’s not as easy to promote your blog on Instagram. There is only one outbound link, and that’s in your bio.
- Share a post about the blog. Unfortunately, it takes a few clicks to get to your blog. Some true fans may leave instagram and search for your blog post (which they’ll do IF you’ve got a strong follower base). Others will go to your bio for the link.
- Update your Instagram bio with the link. You can use Link.tree or your own Instagram landing page
- Do a live or Instagram story (or reel, whatever the hell they are)
TikTok
If your audience hangs on TikTok you can too. I don’t know much about it, so if you find out can you tell me? So if you have followers there, you should use TikTok to promote your blog.
Once is never enough on twitter. Tweets have a very short lifespan. So, you should schedule regular tweets about your post. You can schedule regular tweets about your blog using the right hashtags. Go nuts, tweet the life out of it. Or, read this guide on how often to tweet about blog posts.
According to Pinterest expert Jenny Slaytor, you should create ten pins for each blog post. After you publish a blog post, take core elements of each blog post and turn them into pins. Canva makes it super easy to create pinnable images.
Pinterest is not just for product businesses. If you offer a service, you can totally find stuff to pin, such as:
- step-by-step guides
- how to pins
- quotes
- advice
- reasons why your audience should do something
YouTube videos
It’s never been easier to create a video for your blog posts. I don’t make a video for each post, I confess. (I do make plenty of videos though.) But it’s a great way to drive website traffic and build your personal brand. Simply outline the key points of your blog in your video. YouTube is a huge search engine, so you may find that your videos help your website SEO too.
Tired yet?
A good rule of thumb is to spend as much time promoting your blog as you did writing it.
