Do you hate blogging? Plenty of people would rather fold a king-size fitted sheet than write their blog.
Not me. I love blogging. Today, I’m here to persuade you of the benefits of blogging for business. Hopefully when you can see the amazing benefits of blogging you’ll be inspired to dust off your neglected blog and give it another crack.
Shall we?
Benefit of blogging for business #1: connect with your customers
This has to be number one. You want to share helpful advice and information that will help your customers know, like and trust you.
A blog is a great way to do that.
People read your blog. They realise you know what you’re talking about.
You can show lotsa personality in your blog. If you have a team, you can showcase their individual strengths and areas of expertise.
Janine is a jewellery retailer. It’s a competitive landscape. Her site, Desiderate features her blog. This year, she’s working her way through the birthstones for each month. Her articles show her personality, craftsmanship and joy of her work. It’s a terrific way to connect with customers.
Benefit of blogging for business #2: show authority
You know your stuff. So prove it. Writing a blog allows you to riff on what matters to you. You can share how you go above and beyond. Blog about what you stand for – and against. Share how you hate shonksters ripping off innocent customers or your disdain for the colour lilac. (Just me?)
Writing a well-structured blog shows your knowledge. You’re an expert. I reckon you really are quite very good and also smart.
The core of a good blogging strategy is a commitment to giving massive value.
Neil Patel
Google calls it EAT
- Expertise
- Authority
- Trust
I’m using this strategy right now. I want to be positioned as an expert on blogging, so here I am blogging about blogging. Boom.
My client Daniela is brilliant at this. She shares her expertise in her area: car stackers for building developments. We publish regular blogs on the subject of car stackers. Her audience (architects, builders and property developers) appreciate the insightful advice. So, when they think car stackers, Daniela is top of mind.
Benefit of blogging for business #3: repurposing content
Do you ever open your social media pages and think ‘what the hell am I gonna post today?’
I do all the time.
If you have a library of blog articles, you can repurpose them on the regular.
What’s the point of taking the time to write a blog post and sharing it just once? Given that about 5% of your followers on social media see your post, sharing it only once means 95% of your cal won’t see your awesome blog article. It’s total madness, I tells ya.
Each blog should be repurposed at least ten times.
Grab a snippet of gold from your blog. Canva it up into a pretty social media post (quotes and stats do well here). Schedule it fortnightly over ten weeks – gold!
And a year after you publish, update your blog with the latest info or data and share it again for even more eyeballs.
Benefit of blogging for business #4 SEO, baby
We all want to rank on Google. Well, google loves blogs. So blog!
The good thing about boosting your Google rankings is that you’re capturing customers when they are READY to buy. You don’t have to persuade them they need your thingamajig. They Googled it already.
Google delivers you a stream of customers who’ve already decided they need your product or service. That’s half the sales process done and dusted.
But how to rank your blog on Google? That’s enough for an entire article. Here’s some tips on choosing a focus keyword. You can rank for various phrases all associated with your core service or product. Over time, you build up an impressive library of useful content. Google loves that. Plus, by having plenty of articles or readers, you improve your website dwell time. Google loves that too.
I know I’m making Google sound a like a high-maintenance date who’s demanding and hard to impress. But, once you are ranking well for the right terms and your phone is ringing? You will be glad you worked hard to impress Google.
Benefit of blogging for business #5: beat the competition
We all have an abundance mindset right? There’s enough to go round for everyone. Sure.
But not when they are outranking you. Especially not when YOU do better work. Particularly when they don’t deserve to outrank you, the good-for-nothing little upstarts.
Pardon me. I got carried away.
So by blogging you can stand out from your competition in several ways.
- Have a blog when they don’t bother
- Be better- blogging more valuable articles with more info, better resources, more readable content or more frequency
- Give a better impression if their last blog was published six months ago (and it’s the only post that reads ‘welcome to our blog’
- If you blog actual useful content, not ‘we’re so great’ puff pieces
You can also use a blog to rank for more search terms than your competitors. Moving a few spots in the search engine results pages can make a huge difference to your income. You can use SEO tools to see what phrases they are chasing and what backlinks they’re getting. Then, if you are feeling dastardly, you can beat them at their own game.
So, to summarise the five benefits of blogging for business:
- add value to your customers
- position yourself as an expert
- have content to repurpose
- rank on Google
- beat your competitors
